Joy has wavy blond hair and blue eyes. She became a multi-millionaire at age 4 by winning the lottery, and donates almost all of her allowance (100 dollars per month) to the poor and to animal shelters. She is 11 years old. She is 5 feet tall, thin, athletic, and most of the time, kind and gentle. She likes to do gymnastics, go horse riding, dance, and go to private karate lessons. Joy has one 13 year old brother, Paul, who she loves to fight with (she always wins). They live with their mom in Los Angeles, California. Their dad died in a coal mine explosion when she was only 2 years old. Also, when she was 9 years old, she fell off a swing and broke her ankle, and had to go to the hospital for 4 months. Joy's favorite animals are horses.

This story begins in Joy's apartment in Los Angeles, California, in 2068, in the future. It is not a very safe place, and there is much crime such as murder, stealing, pick-pocketing and "alien" sightings!

Most of the women sew clothes and grow a garden. The men build houses and apartments. Young children love to read and older children and teens are always on the computer, like Joy. For past-time, adults sleep. Sometimes Joy's mother sleeps all day.

It is hot and dry for most of the year. It is late October now and is getting cool.

Max (as he likes himself to be called) is pretty strong and very couragous. He has jet-black hair and dark blue eyes. He likes dark colors such as black, purple, dark green, and dark blue, and he always wears clothes in these colors. Max is 16 years old and over 6 feet tall. He does not like to talk much and is not very social. He does not have any family or friends. He lives in a hut that he built himself in a dense forest a few miles away from Los Angeles. He shares his hut with his many talking animal friends. Max likes to practice archery in the forest while hunting for food.

horseback riding, walking, two-person race-bike

>Horseback riding:

Joy's neighbor has a horse called Midnight. He is all black with unnatural

green eyes. He likes to run and is not very trainable. Midnight is 3 years old.

>Two-person race bike:

>The race bike is a new invention. There are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6-person race bikes. They are a mix of mostly dirt bikes and motorcycles. They have four wheels and can go up to 200 mph. They are pretty safe. You do not have to have a drivers licence to drive a race bike. Joy really wants to have one of them. They are very expensive, up to 1,000,000 dollars! They come in all the colors of the rainbow and black, white, and brown. Joy's favorites are the multi-colored ones.

Part of the journey will be done on foot.

Joy's main way of transportation will be the two-person race bike.

Dream: Linik's Purple Convertible

This is Joy's dream about herself going on a trip to Washington D.C in a purple convertible:

"I was in a purple convertible. I didn't know where I was going, and nobody was driving! Also, I was locked into the car! I screamed and screamed until I was hoarse. Next, I tried banging on the car windows. Nothing worked. All the other drivers just kept on driving, not looking out their windows. Suddenly, the boombox in the back of the car started playing "It's Electric" and I had an idea. This was a convertible, wasn't it? I grabbed the handle that pulled the top off the car and... ZZZZT! I was electrocuted! I quickly found out I could still scream. I was very dazed. Finally, I found the strength to sit up. There, in the driver's seat sat a creature! It looked half wolf half man. It grinned at me revealing very long razor sharp fangs! I could not pull myself away from the horrible creature."

Joy woke up.
